Brazilian football icon Marta Vieira da Silva etched her name deeper into the annals of history by playing a decisive role in Brazil’s dramatic triumph at the 2025 CONMEBOL Copa América Femenina — her fourth continental title.

The 39-year-old legend, who returned to the national team just months after announcing her international retirement, proved once again why she is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

Marta scored two crucial goals in the final against hosts Colombia, earned the Player of the Match award, and was later named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Marta had previously lifted the Copa América title in 2003, 2010, and 2018, and her return to the Canarinha ahead of the 2025 edition took many by surprise.

Initially stepping away from international football following the 2024 Paris Olympics, she was recalled in May for a pre-tournament friendly — a decision that would prove pivotal for Brazil’s campaign.

In the semifinals, she contributed a goal in Brazil’s dominant 5–1 win over Uruguay. But it was in the final at El Campín Stadium in Bogotá that Marta once again demonstrated her class.

Entering the match in the 82nd minute with the score locked at 2–2, she made an immediate impact. After Colombia’s Mayra Ramírez put the hosts ahead in the 88th minute, Marta equalized in stoppage time with a stunning left-footed strike from outside the box.

Then in extra time, she gave Brazil a 4–3 lead with a composed finish using her right foot — showcasing the ambidexterity that has defined her career.

Although Colombia equalized again through Leicy Santos, Brazil would hold their nerve in the penalty shootout to clinch a record-extending ninth Copa América Femenina title.

Despite seeing her penalty saved in the shootout, Marta’s leadership, clutch performance, and iconic number 10 jersey inspired her teammates and fans alike.

“Marta’s return reminded the world of her enduring brilliance,” said Brazil coach Arthur Elias.

“She showed that class is permanent and that she still has the heart and hunger of a champion.”

With this latest triumph, Marta continues to set the gold standard in women’s football.
