England Women Fall To Ten-Player Brazil In Manchester Friendly

England Women suffered a 2-1 defeat to ten-player Brazil in an international friendly at the Etihad Stadium, watched by 37,460 fans on Saturday.

Brazil made a bright start, with Ludmila going close before Bia Zaneratto opened the scoring in the ninth minute, racing through the middle to slot past Khiara Keating.

Zaneratto turned provider soon after, setting up Dudinha, whose strike went in off the front post to double Brazil’s lead inside 20 minutes.

The visitors were reduced to ten players in the 21st minute when captain Angelina was shown a straight red card for bringing down Ella Toone as the last defender. From the resulting free kick, Alex Greenwood struck the crossbar, and Jess Carter’s rebound failed to find the target.

England pressed forward before half-time, with Toone shooting narrowly wide and Keira Walsh volleying over the bar.

Five minutes into the second half, Beth Mead was fouled in the box by Zaneratto, and Georgia Stanway converted the resulting penalty to pull one back for the Lionesses.

Duda came close to restoring Brazil’s two-goal cushion with a long-range effort, while Aggie Beever-Jones’ shot was deflected wide at the other end.

Alessia Russo headed over from close range, Esme Morgan tested the goalkeeper from distance, and Stanway rattled the crossbar late on as England pushed for an equaliser.

Despite sustained pressure, Brazil held firm to claim an impressive win against the European champions.
